Leap

I lived in Vietnam until I was 7 years old. I used to reside within an internet café in the poorer area of Vietnam. Our café faced the street in a more developed area; You could say it was a “front” when you go down the main street. And next to these houses leads gravel roads, dirt roads, or no road at all down an area to a less developed area. Most of this place is untamed land with greenery flourishing all over.
One day, My friends and I ventured down one of these paths because we were bored out of our minds. We were afraid of going too far into the untamed land and getting lost. So, what we usually do is that we just start playing tag around this area. However, there was a backpack/luggage that was floating down the creek. The geniuses that we were, we came up with a new game to entertain ourselves.
Our game was that whoever falls into the creek loses. The goal of the game was to get to the other side of the creek. The length of the creek wasn’t huge but with our tiny body, it was more than a leap. Our humongous brain decided to use the luggage as a stepping stone to the other side. Here lies the problem: The luggage was the most unstable platform ever. We started to jump across with one of my friends going first while I go second and the third guy goes last. The first guy who jumped got across. When I jumped, however, I took too long and the luggage tipped over. I fell into the sewage-filled water and got covered in grime.
When I got home, I tried to sneak past my mom's best I can because I didn’t want to get into trouble for falling into sewage. She caught the smell anyway and told me to take a shower. She was just glad I wasn’t dead. This wasn’t the end of the series of stupid games that ended in stupid prizes that I played when I was little but it was one of the less dangerous ones.
Tell a story about a travel mishap or misadventure. Did you get lost? Camp in the rain? Lose your passport?

  1. We all make mistakes when we're young. That's how we learn to not make them as we grow up. You story (believe it or not) is included in this list of mistakes as strange as it is. I hope you've learned your lesson not to jump on luggage floating in sewage water.

  2. All of your childhood games sound dangerous and unsanitary, but I guess thats just a part of childhood. It's super cool to get insight into what life in vietnam was like though, and I enjoy all of your stories. You should tell more :)

  3. I love your usage of words. I think that children in general just find the most stupid and dangerous ways to entertain themselves, but just as we say in league, it's limit testing. Honestly, at times I think it's better to get hurt, or have a near death experience, because you know not to do it again. I used to always climb the pine trees near our house, going right next to the power line, and climbing onto the oak. It took one branch nearly snapping beneath my foot to teach me to be cautious whenever I climbed those trees.
