How I got addicted to League of Legends and how it went

Even though I played all kinds of the game when I was little, the primary game that I usually played was first-person shooter games. I never really ventured to other games besides either first-person shooter or 3rd person shooter (shoulder view/first-person, i.e Fortnite).

When I first saw my brother played a MOBA game called League of Legends, I didn't really dislike it at first but I gradually dislike it because it caused my brother does not do anything else but play League of Legends. I kind of blamed the game for his annoying personality.

However, when the gamer group in my class at uni started to play League of Legends, a few of them also invited me to play. I created my account under the username of "PepsiOfTime" because I was drinking Pepsi and watching Doctor Who I think. At first, I completely disliked how the game felt. It wasn't my dynamic. The pace of the game was a lot slower than average FPS games that revolve around quick and fast action. I quit MOBA after the first 3 games where I constantly died; Getting stuck on a gray screen constantly where you can't do anything isn't very fun. It doesn't help that League of Legends had an overwhelming amount of champion that you need to know and what each of them does; It gave league of Legends an overwhelming learning curve that I personally think wasn't beginner-friendly.

I think over time I got bored of FPS games and then decide to try out League of Legends. Utilizing sites such and u.gg, op.gg, etc, I started getting comfortable with the game and eventually, my competitive nature gave into the game. The reason competition in League of Legends caused me to play the game was because I was previously addicted to Ranked Overwatch. League had a really strong e-sport scene and their ranked game mode wasn't half bad either. League of Legends ranked gave me a nice change of pace from Overwatch at the time. I think at the time I was also really wanted to prove I was better at the game than certain people; I was really bad at the game and as a result, I played so many games to get better. The graphics the game was also recently overhauled which gave it a much better look which compelled me to play the game even more.

League of Legends eventually tangent into other things such as competition more seriously in IRL Events (I.E GGleagues, E-sport club, etc.). League of Legends kind of inspired me to start other projects such as logo designing and designing a website for E-sport Club. Even though I know that the club probably won't last after the gamer senior graduated, it expanded my horizon to what I would have done with my skill in art and designing (partially because my initial design for the logo was literal garbage and Geoffrey wanted it redone).

It wasn't all good and fun though because League of Legends soon became an addiction rather than just a hobby. I've managed to kind of curve that addiction and regulated it better now. I don't play as much anymore but I still scrim with a team and play for fun in my free time.

If I were to go back and have a choice to whether or not play League of Legends I think I would have definitely played League of Legends. I might need to control myself a bit but regardless, I don't regret it. I think more school should introduce e-sport to students that are interested in games as it is a way to broaden their perspective and experience. I can not stress this enough though, control is everything when it comes to gaming/esports.

  1. I like how you focuses on your experience through the lens of e-sports. I also liked how you talked about how league of legends helped you grow such as by logo design website design. I also liked how you also openly recognized the negative sides of League of Legions, such as addiction.

  2. Of all the games out, league brings about the most addictions and I don't blame you. Sometimes we find ourselves too invested in things that may be trivial, but no matter what its important to us. I will say though, I'm glad you help escape the vortex that is league addiction, and I'm glad that you can appreciate the game for what it is, as well as being able to make better decisions.

  3. League is truly an addictive game. I admit I spent a little too much time. However, there is definitely something addictive to watching yourself get better at something. I think league taught me a lot about social dynamics, and how synergizing with people is sometimes the most important thing in a team dynamic.
