We are Popcorn
It is amazing how the author was able to write a book with so little plot but still made it interesting. Although I didn't particularly would label this book as my favourite book of all time, it still gave me a good read. If it wasn't for the fact that the book constantly made me think about what I thought about things, I would have dropped this book after the first ten pages. Howie hit me with the first insight of the ranting on about straws. Straws were always one of my favourite things that I use from day to day. When I am drinking an iced drink the ice would always clump up at my lips and that annoyed me. It made me feel nostalgic because when I was little I always struggle to drink things that had ice cubes in it. Howie might not make you feel the same way but in his own special way, he made you feel relateable regardless. An example of such is when he compared himself with Popcorn. He said that he was constantly putting under heat or pressure by his company. It's kind of the same way with us, students, who are being constantly heated and pressured in school until we pop.
*Pop*
I have the same feelings as you regarding The Mezzanine. Howie makes you muse about the intricacies of mundane objects. Your post itself gave me a "Howie" moment. I've personally never experience getting ice clumped around my lips but I can relate to you in a weird way. I liked the popcorn analogy and found it very humorous.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about the ice clumping thing. I can't stand drinking things with ice in it without a straw due to this reason. I love the way you compared us students to popcorn. I think we can all say that at LEAST half of the time we have spent at Uni was used to have small mental breakdowns or "pops". Cool post :)
ReplyDeleteYour completely right! A lot of parts of the book makes me completely wonder how Howie is able to go on this windy tangent on something as simple as straws. Throughout the book, i felt myself building on his tangent, such as your example of straws leading to ice clumping. I also love the analogy u made between us and popcorn, makes it seem like uni is just simply a big microwave, cooking us to perfection. Cool post!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you. The way Howie draws you in with how relatable his remarks are keep you reading even though there might not be much of a plot. For me the most relatable moment in this book was when Howie was talking about racing the escalator to tie his shoelaces before reaching the top. It reminds me of when I walk down a sidewalk, I always have to have a set number of steps in each square and stepping on the cracks is illegal.
